10 Tips In 2 Minutes - A Tribute To Mothers - May 9, 2010 - Segment Five
Betsy and Renee recap the lessons learned from mothers and daughters sharing their experiences working together in the business world. The qualities of a mother really bear down on what’s appropriate for business and what it takes to be successful, such as being a mentor to others and emotional intelligence. Women tend to put others first and themselves second, an approach that all business owners should consider more earnestly. The notion of collaboration is also important, as research shows that women like to get ideas from others, share those ideas, and make sure to give credit to those who contributed to the idea’s success.

A Tribute To Mothers - May 9, 2010 - Segment Four
Caneel Fraser, a practicing attorney who is also Renee’s daughter, joins the show to discuss what it was like growing up with a working professional mother. While her mother was consistently busy, Caneel and her sisters always saw their mother when it mattered. As a professional businesswoman herself, Caneel notes that her mother was a great role model to have growing up: she was out during the week at meetings and events, but she was there for dinner, when you needed help studying for a test, on the weekends, or when you felt like you had a horrible day in high school and just couldn’t go on. Although Renee would bring work home with her, Caneel points out that her mother did so in a good way, talking about the difficult parts of the job, but also sharing the highlights of her work. Renee clarifies that when she brought work home, there was also all her other commitments in addition to the advertising agency, such as the boards she was on and the volunteer work she did. Having those stories and experiences growing up inculcated a sense of commitment and service in Caneel, and also provided a good idea of what to expect once she was out in the real world herself.

A Tribute To Mothers - May 9, 2010 - Segment Three
Callers Gloria Allred and her daughter, Lisa Bloom, speak about the influence and impact on Lisa of Gloria being a working mother and an attorney. Gloria, in the 35th year of her law firm (Allred, Maroko, and Goldberg) says she’s always worked outside the home, but hopes that she provided the love and attention that Lisa deserved, as well as the encouragement to be the very best she can be. Gloria’s philosophy has always been to give a voice to the voiceless, power to the powerless, hope to the hopeless, and to help empower women and inspire them to empower and inspire others to win change. Lisa says she learned from her mother early on that it’s important to take a principled stand, and that her mother has absolutely been the #1 inspiration for everything she’s done in her life.
Initially, Lisa graduated from law school in the 1980s, and worked in New York for the first 5 years doing business litigation and corporate law. One day, she realized “Why am I not working with mom? She does exactly the kind of law I want to practice. What is wrong with me?” Lisa moved back out to Los Angeles and ended up working with her mom at her firm for 9 years back in the 1990s. Recently, Lisa started her own firm called The Bloom Firm, but for 8 years before that, she was hosting a show on Court TV, and her contract prohibited her from practicing law. Additionally, Lisa is a regular legal analyst for CNN and CBS News, appearing frequently on programs like Anderson Cooper 360º and The Early Show, respectively.
So many people called Lisa over the last few years because they saw her on television and were seeking justice but didn’t know where to turn. Lisa didn’t want to continue to say no to all those people, which led to the birth of The Bloom Firm. She is licensed to practice law in California and New York, but if people call her from outside those areas, she can often help them find appropriate representation because she knows attorneys all over the country from her television work. For more information on The Bloom Firm, visit their website at www.thebloomfirm.com.

A Tribute To Mothers - May 9, 2010 - Segment Two
Callers Karen Caplan and her sister, Jackie Caplan Wiggins, talk about lessons learned working with their mother at the company she founded, Freida’s. Freida’s is a produce company that markets and distributes unusual fruits and vegetables to supermarkets and food service distributors across the United States, and they were also the produce company who originated bringing kiwi fruit to the US. Jackie started at the company in 1983, and although she worked summers and winters growing up, she had no intention of going into the family business when she went off to college. However, it proved to be a natural evolution for Jackie because it was something she loved doing, and when she came to work for the company, it came as a surprise to her family. On the other hand, Karen got her start in 1977, well before Jackie was with the company. Karen worked with her mom, Freida, for over 30 years, but the biggest challenge for her early on was making sure that her mom got credit for everything that she did. The three women work together everyday and can all bounce ideas off each other, having no problem with one person making a suggestion to make another person’s idea better. As Jackie notes, one of the things they’ve always tried to do is keep business at business and personal at home. By not mixing the two in their day-to-day, it allows them to be much stronger as business owners, and when they’re home, they’re still family.

A Tribute To Mothers - May 9, 2010 - Segment One
Callers Susan Johnson and her daughter, Kerry Johnson Anthony, discuss their experiences owning and operating Susan’s Healthy Gourmet, a company that provides home and office delivery of freshly prepared healthy foods ready-to-eat. Susan’s Healthy Gourmet provides people like pregnant mothers, shut-ins, senior citizens, and health care patients with nutritious and healthy meals, in addition to people who want to eat a healthy home-cooked meal and don’t have time to prepare one. Susan started the company almost 20 years ago—after her kids were grown—and her daughter Kerry came back to run the company after she got her MBA. Kerry started getting her MBA while working at Susan’s because she found out that she was really good at business and decided “I’ve got my nights free, I might as well get my MBA.” In terms of how the other employees feel about the mother-daughter combo running the business, Susan says that it’s all a part of their very collaborative culture. When trying a new meal, they have everybody try it and get their feedback, while also telling their customer service employees how much they appreciate what they do and hearing their stories about customers, since they are the ones who really get to know them.
