Rethink, Reinvent, Retrain – Caller Andrew Greene shares his experience with the Executive MBA (EMBA) program at UCLA Anderson School of Management. As part of a real estate finance course Andrew took, the class took a trip to Dubai and had a chance to meet with some of Dubai and Saudi Arabia’s key developers in the real estate industry, as well as key individuals in the banking industry. Betsy and Renee recap the various ways individuals can reinvent themselves and their career prospects. Most people have about four careers in their lifetimes, and if you’re unhappy in your current job, the key is to think about what you’re passionate about, and then retrain yourself on how to get there. Look for opportunities to expand or continue your education, such as the money available in the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) that pays for people to enroll in a certificate program in certain key areas at UCLA Extension (find out more information at www.uclaextension.edu). For people who want to start their own company, remember that there are often entrepreneurial programs or emphasis in MBA programs. And when you get your new degree, be sure to put your education at the top of your resume, because executive recruiters are looking to see your education and what you’ve learned most recently.

During these tough times, you need to be able to explain some of the tough steps and cutbacks you’ve taken to strengthen your business. Additionally, being profitable is absolutely critical. If you’re not being profitable, then you’re simply in it for fun or as a hobby, which is not what professional business people are all about.
