10 Tips In 2 Minutes - Importing and Exporting - October 24, 2010 - Segment Five

2Minutes&MoreBetsy and Renee review the various opportunities that exist for small business owners to expand their operations through exporting and importing. You can go to www.export.gov, a website sponsored by the US Department of Commerce, to find new markets for your products, or you can walk into a local branch of the Department of Commerce and find out what kind of contacts are available to you. Freight forwarders can also be a great resource to help you find where there might be opportunities for sales in different countries and building connections overseas. And even though you may have a strong business in the US, with economic and pricing pressures, it’s good to look at exporting your products elsewhere, as the “Made In The USA” moniker is a smart one that can actually be a strong basis of branding overseas.

2Minutes&More with Betsy Berkhemer and Renee Fraser airs every Sunday at 1pm on KFWB NEWS TALK 980. Tune in for a full hour of tips for business success.

10 Tips In 2 Minutes - Gender Matters - October 10, 2010 - Segment Five

2Minutes&MoreBetsy and Renee recap the various communicative style differences between the genders and how those differences can be capitalized upon for a distinct competitive advantage. For women, one way to avoid the age old problem of suggesting an idea, only to have a male colleague repeat it later on and get the credit, is to frame your purpose as you begin speaking and get the attention of the room so they know you’re about to speak. Also, state your idea without any soft introductions, get straight to the point and ask them what they think later. Frame your comments by saying “This is an interesting and important suggestion I have,” so as not to diminish yourself and what you are about to say. Don’t use tag questions, such as “this is an excellent report, don’t you think?” Drop the end and be affirmative and stronger with your language. Be more specific in your requests, such as opting to say ““I want that report by Friday” rather than “It would be nice to have that report by Friday.” Finally, ask for what you want and don’t be afraid when you’re negotiating to build a case for yourself and then authoritatively deliver that case.
