Callers Susan Johnson and her daughter, Kerry Johnson Anthony, discuss their experiences owning and operating Susan’s Healthy Gourmet, a company that provides home and office delivery of freshly prepared healthy foods ready-to-eat. Susan’s Healthy Gourmet provides people like pregnant mothers, shut-ins, senior citizens, and health care patients with nutritious and healthy meals, in addition to people who want to eat a healthy home-cooked meal and don’t have time to prepare one. Susan started the company almost 20 years ago—after her kids were grown—and her daughter Kerry came back to run the company after she got her MBA. Kerry started getting her MBA while working at Susan’s because she found out that she was really good at business and decided “I’ve got my nights free, I might as well get my MBA.” In terms of how the other employees feel about the mother-daughter combo running the business, Susan says that it’s all a part of their very collaborative culture. When trying a new meal, they have everybody try it and get their feedback, while also telling their customer service employees how much they appreciate what they do and hearing their stories about customers, since they are the ones who really get to know them.
